Dr. Clokie identified BMP as a tool in reconstructive jaw surgical treatment as early as the 1990’s. In fact, he was able to fix the first jawbone with BMPO in 1999. Utilizing 3 milligrams of crushed limb bones he sources from 40 cadavers. The procedure actually regrows jawbone by encouraging the stem cells within an adult patient to regrow bone tissue. Since the use of limb bones was not an authorized source, Dr. Clokie later turned to a U.S. biotech company that produces BMP in the cells of Chinese hamsters. His treatment has also been attempted by several other oral cosmetic surgeons in South Africa. Even with these cosmetic surgeries, the use of BMP to reconstruct jaw bone is still developing. Cameron Clokie also has additional strategies in the works to produce BMP.
Dr. Clokie believes that BMP can be produced by placing the human BMP producing protein into the embryo of a goat. This method is expected to produce a significant amount of BMP protein in the goat’s milk. This resembles an innovation established by a Montreal biotech company that placed a spider-silk-producing gene into a goat embryo. The goat was then cloned into a herd to standardize the spider-silk protein for commercial and medical usages.
